Our original worship space has served us well for over thirty years, but we are rapidly outgrowing our space.  Within the past five years, the growth of the parish as well as the surrounding area of Magnolia has increased substantially.  What’s more, the population in Magnolia is projected to increase 3% per year for the next five years and another 5%-6% per year for the 5-10 years after that.  We anticipate this growth to affect our membership numbers as well.  Over the last two years, St. Matthias has registered over 100 new families annually and we don’t see this growth slowing.

We considered expanding the current church and evaluated whether this would be a feasible option.  However, in order to expand our current church, it would need to meet all current building codes, which increased our costs substantially.  It was determined that it would cost $500,000 - $750,000 to gain, at most, an additional 150 seats, which we would rapidly outgrow and then be left with no other option but to build new at that time.  This made it financially impractical to expand our current church. Instead, we are focusing our efforts on building a new church that will meet all our needs both now and into the future. In doing so we will also need to clear room on our site for the new church where the pole barn and bazaar kitchen buildings are currently located.

More Ample and Appropriate Worship Space

•    We currently have a seating capacity of 280. On a typical weekend, it is not uncommon to find the 10:30 AM Sunday Mass filled to capacity with folding chairs set up in the Narthex to accommodate the overflow.  This is also true for the 1:00 PM Mass and the Holyday Masses of Christmas and Easter, which must be held concurrently in the worship space and in the hall.  It is not viable to add more Masses to alleviate this overcrowding; first, because Father Chris is our only priest, and it would be an unfair and an undue burden to expect him to serve more Masses; and second, the shortage of priests.  Because of this consistent overcrowding and lack of space, we are losing families.

•    Our CCE program continues to grow at a rapid pace.  We had over 650 children enrolled in 2015-16, the most ever.  We believe that one reason for this growth has been the introduction of Mass for the children.  Unfortunately, due to limited space in our church, it is not feasible to have all children and their families attend a weekly Mass together.  Our youth are the core and the future of our faith.  It is critical that we invest in our youth to provide the education and opportunity to develop their faith in Christ.

•    We also need additional sanctuary space in order to offer the best liturgies we can and to meet the latest norms and guidelines of the liturgy.  Our altar is currently too small and does not promote reverence.  It is very plain and lacks many of the appropriate and prominent liturgical furnishings. We need a more substantial altar worthy of where the Liturgy of the Eucharist is celebrated.

•    Our Baptistery area and Baptismal Font are also both too small.  In fact, our current Baptismal Font is not a permanent fixture; now fixed on a rollaway pedestal with a crystal glass bowl. Because not being permanently placed at the entrance to the sanctuary, it is not in keeping with current liturgical practice.

•    The sound system and amplifier in the church is also old and inefficient.  The sound periodically cuts out and the poor sound quality to the narthex and cry room is making it hard for people to hear.

Support Space Needs

As we have grown, so too has our need for larger and more appropriate support spaces.

•    Narthex / Gathering Space.  Our current narthex is too small for our burgeoning faith community.  This makes it difficult to greet and get to know one another better, which are key to building a more closely connected community.

•    We also no longer have a Day Chapel to use for smaller liturgies.  To make use of available space, what was once the day chapel is now used to make room for the choir.  The Archdiocese suggests that parishes have a day chapel to use for daily Masses, smaller weddings, funerals, or quinceañeras that would benefit from a smaller chapel.

•    Our Cry Room currently is too small.  The most it can hold is 12-15 people, which is not enough for a growing community with younger parents.

•    The current Choir Space is also inadequate.  It is confining with little room to grow and is distracting because the choir is situated so close to the pews in front of them.

•    We also need additional Sacristies.  Our current sacristy is small and crowded, housing all the vesting closets as well as all the liturgical vessels.  We need more ample working sacristies for all of our liturgical items as well as more appropriately placed vesting sacristies for celebrants and for liturgical ministers.  It is very difficult for Fr. Chris to prepare for the Masses, as he should and would like to.

•    Our Restrooms are also inadequate for our growing community.  We currently have only two, very small restrooms and have no changing stations.  This is not sufficient for the many that attend Mass with us on any given weekend. 

•    We also lack a Private Family/Bride’s/Quinceañera Room.  As we all know, funerals, weddings, and quinceañeras are times when many rely heavily on the support of their church.  Although, we have no dedicated room where families’ preparing for these special times can gather in privacy, the Saint Faustina room is currently being used for this purpose, and it does not provide the level of privacy we seek nor meet all our needs.

•    Parking is also becoming a problem.  We now have a much greater number of families attending Mass.  Consequently, we need additional parking spaces for some Masses every week and for all Masses on the holy days and holidays so that people aren’t dissuaded from becoming and remaining members and attending Mass here.

Nuestras Necesidades

Nuestra Iglesia nos ha servido bien en estos 30 años, pero es un hecho que se necesita más espacio. En los últimos 5 años, el crecimiento de nuestra parroquia, así como el crecimiento de a población en Magnolia y sus alrededores ha sido substancial. Aun mas, la población de Magnolia proyecta un crecimiento entre el 5-6 % anual para los próximos 5-10 años. Anticipamos que esto resultara en familias adicionales en nuestra comunidad. En los últimos 2 años más de 100 familias se han unido a San Matías y pensamos que esto continuará.

Se consideró expandir la Iglesia actual y ver si esta pudiera ser una solución factible. Sin embargo para poder expandirla sería necesario actualizar el edificio a los códigos de construcción actuales lo cual incrementaría el costo de remodelación grandemente. Se determino que costaría entre $500,000 - $750,000 el añadir 150 lugares a lo mucho. Por lo tanto sería económicamente impráctico para ampliar nuestra iglesia actual, ya que rápidamente sobresaliéramos este espacio. Es por eso que estamos enfocando nuestros esfuerzos en construir una Iglesia nueva, la cual será la solución a nuestras necesidades actuales y futuras. Para la construcción de esta nueva Iglesia, será necesario remover los edificios que son actualmente el granero rojo y las cocinas del bazar.

Un lugar más amplio y apropiado para las necesidades de nuestra Iglesia

• Nuestra iglesia hoy tiene una capacidad para 280 personas. En un fin de semana típico, es común el tener que poner bancas y sillas extras en el salón de entrada para acomodar a los feligreses de la misa de las 10:30 AM. Esto es también el caso en la misa de la 1 PM y más aun para las misas de Navidad y Pascua en donde el salón de convivencia se usa para la gente que ya no cabe en la Iglesia. El añadir más misas no es una solución viable pues el Padre Chris es el único sacerdote asignado a nuestra parroquia y no es justo el asignarle una carga mayor a la que ya tiene. Se ha tratado de solicitar otro sacerdote sin éxito. Otra problema que se ha suscitado por estar las misas muy llenas es que hay familias que han dejado de asistir a la misa.

• Nuestros programas de Educación Religiosa también han crecido a paso rápido. Tenemos más de 650 niños y niñas inscritos para el año escolar 2015-2016. Creemos que la razón de este crecimiento es la introducción de la misa para los niños. Desafortunadamente, debido a la falta de espacio, no es posible que los niños y sus familias puedan asistir juntos a la misa. Nuestros niños y jóvenes son el centro y el futuro de nuestra fe. Es de importancia crítica invertir en nuestros niños y jóvenes proveyendo la educación y oportunidades necesarias para el desarrollo de su Fe en Cristo.

• También se necesita espacio adicional en el altar para poder ofrecer lo mejor en nuestras liturgias y celebraciones de acuerdo a las normas y guías que marca la liturgia. Nuestro altar es muy pequeño y esto no promueve la debida reverencia. El altar es sumamente simple y no ofrece lo necesario para los requerimientos litúrgicos. Se necesita un altar más grande que sea digno de la celebración Eucarística.

• El área para bautizos es muy pequeña. De hecho la fuente que se usa para bautizos es temporal porque no existe el espacio adecuado. Esto va en contra a los requerimientos litúrgicos para bautismos.

• El sistema de sonido y el amplificador en la iglesia también es anticuado e ineficiente. El sonido se corta periódicamente y la mala calidad de sonido lo hace difícil que escuche la gente que está en a la sala de nártex y el salón para niños.

Espacios adicionales que se necesitan

Con el crecimiento que tenemos la necesidad de mayores espacios se hace apremiante.

• Nártex/Vestíbulo de entrada. El espacio entre la entada y la iglesia es muy pequeño. Es difícil saludar y no se presta para la interacción con los fieles, lo que es importante para tener un sentido saludable de comunidad.

• No tenemos capilla para celebraciones pequeñas de 100 o menos asistentes. Lo que fue la capilla se usa ahora como espacio para el coro y así ofrecer más lugares a los parroquianos en la Iglesia. La Arquidiócesis recomienda una capilla para la misa diaria, pequeñas bodas, funerales, o quinceañeras que por su número de asistentes no requieran la Iglesia completa.

• El salón para niños pequeños es muy chico. Solo puede acomodar entre 12-15 personas lo cual no es adecuado para nuestra comunidad creciente.

• El espacio para el coro es también inadecuado y no ofrece espacio para crecimiento. También distrae a la gente que está delante de este espacio porque su proximidad con las bancas de adelante.

• También se necesita Sacristías adicionales. La sacristía de hoy es pequeña y se llena de gente fácilmente. Ahí no solo están los closets para las vestimentas del padre y de los diáconos sino también todo lo necesario para la celebración de la misa, como son las copas, el vino, etc. Teniendo todo en una sola sacristía dificulta la preparación adecuada para la misa.

• Los baños también son muy pequeños. La Iglesia cuenta con dos baños pequeños que no ofrecen el espacio para cambiarse. No son suficientes para la cantidad de gente que viene a misa.

• No se cuenta con un salón dedicado para familias, bodas y quinceañeras donde la gente pueda usar en privado antes de las ceremonias. Mientras que la sala Santa Faustina en la actualidad se utiliza para este propósito, no proporciona el nivel de privacidad que buscamos.

• El estacionamiento se ha convertido en un problema. Mientras más asisten a misa más espacios para estacionarse son necesarios. El problema de estacionarse lejos desanima a muchos de venir a misa.
