Our Needs
School Improvements
Poor Educational Spaces – Portable Classrooms
- Too often, we have had to replace roof tiles to mitigate leaks. When it rains, student's desks must be moved so buckets can be placed to catch dripping water.
- Though the classrooms are reasonably comfortable, poor insulation makes the hallways and restrooms very cold.
- The portable classroom environments are a challenge for our students and teachers as well as a financial burden on our school and church.
No Flexible-Use Breakout Teaching Spaces
- Our school’s ability to provide additional educational opportunities is limited because we do not have flexible large or small-group breakout spaces.
- This prohibits our teachers from being able to provide the range of specialized and unique instruction and tutoring they can and should to our students.
Shared Music Room
- Our school’s music program is constantly impacted by its lack of dedicated space in the school building.
- This year, the music program finally moved out of the church’s gathering room and into shared space in the school. However, this space is not dedicated to the music program and lacks safe storage of expensive musical instruments.
Inadequate Security & Office Space
Our school’s entry and the staff office area need to be improved to provide a safe, adequate, and professional facility.
- The entryway security needs to be upgraded so we can monitor and control school building access.
- The staff office area layout needs to be more functional, there are no staff restroom facilities in the school, and staff work and breakout space is needed.
Gym Problems
A gymnasium is such an integral part of a school's curriculum and activities but our gym's issues really impact its usability.
- The gym walls are badly dinged and damaged from years of wear and tear from gym classes and games.
- Most problematic are the gym's poor acoustics that make it extremely noisy. Gym classes are extremely loud and hardly any other activities can be held in the room because it is so noisy.
- Outside the room, and especially in the adjacent classroom, sounds from the gym are prohibitively disruptive.
Fire Safety System Out of Code
While the school has a fire alarm system, it does not have a sprinkler system. This violates current building code requirements and, more importantly, is a serious safety concern. It puts our school building and everyone using it, including our students, in danger in the event of a fire.
Worn Hallway Flooring
Throughout the school, the hallway’s old flooring tiles are worn, and there are loose ones that are a tripping hazard to our students and teachers.
Parking Lot Improvements
Inadequate Parking
- We do not have enough parking either as required by the city or to accommodate all those who attend large holiday services and other big events.
- Our current parking lot needs to be repaired and resealed to prevent further damage from cracks and weather elements.
- Our school also has poor traffic flow for families dropping off or picking up children before and after school.
When we purchased the temporary classrooms six years ago, they needed repair and mold removal, and they have needed constant repair and improvement ever since.
